Rwanda Emerges as Regional Hub for German Language Certification as ECL Graduates Celebrate Success in Kigali

On April 19, 2026, students from Der Sprachen Hub | German Language School in Rwanda were awarded their European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages (ECL) certificates after successfully passing B1, B2, and C1 level examinations.

The achievement marks a significant milestone, opening new and exciting pathways in higher education and professional careers.

Egide Ntihinyuzwa, who passed at the B1 level, emphasized the dedication required to master the German language. “Learning German demands commitment and perseverance. This certificate will help me continue advancing,” he said.

For Divine Mugeni, the certification has strengthened ambitions to pursue a medical career in Germany, enhancing confidence in accessing opportunities abroad.

Ornella Mugisha, another B1 certificate recipient, highlighted the importance of multilingualism. Having begun her journey in August last year, she credited her success to dedicated teachers and high-quality learning resources. “Learning multiple languages is essential as it broadens one’s ability to connect internationally,” she noted.

The school’s director, Mwizerwa Mulisa, described the availability of ECL examinations in Rwanda as a transformative development. Previously, candidates were required to travel abroad at significant cost and inconvenience.
“Students can now take internationally recognized exams without leaving the country.
This not only saves money but also ensures access to globally accepted certification,” he said.

Since Rwanda was officially authorized to host ECL German exams on December 21, 2025, demand has surged. Registration doubled between February and April 2026, with 224 candidates sitting for the most recent session.
Registration is currently open for the next examination session scheduled for June 12–13, 2026.

Beyond serving Rwandan students, Der Sprachen Hub has evolved into a regional center, attracting candidates from across East Africa as well as countries such as Zimbabwe and Cameroon.

Rwanda now joins a select group of five African countries—alongside Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, and the Republic of Congo—authorized to offer ECL certification. This positions the country as a key player in delivering high-quality, internationally aligned language education.
By making German language learning and certification more accessible, Der Sprachen Hub continues to play a vital role in empowering young people in Rwanda and the wider region, unlocking global opportunities in education, employment, and beyond.
